Phonics Eggs

Each week we try to think of novel ways for the children to learn phonics through play.

This activity has been a real hit with the children as well as just in time for Easter!

We have really loved observing the children playing in the 'kitchen'.

We have heard comments from the children such as:

"Lets scramble the  'a'  and the  's'  in the same pan."

"What egg would you like? The  'm'  or the  't'."

"The hedgehog wants the  'i'  egg."

"Please cook me the  'c'  egg on toast."

"I think the  'th'  egg is over-cooked now."

It has been so rewarding to hear the children use the correct phoneme sounds...

The children came up with lots of different ways to play with the phonics eggs..

Ellies' Tea Party

Ellie (aged four) - set up this tea party for her hedgehog which she had brought into school for "Spring Show and Tell"

Ellie used  's'  'a'   't'   'p'   'i'   'n'   eggs for her tea party...

Digraph Eggs (th, sh, ch, ng...)

Flip the phonics eggs to read a word on the back of the egg...

CVC Phonics Eggs

CVC means - constant vowel constant - such as pig, bus, rat, pet, rod...

These are the first words children learn to read as they are easy to segment and decode...

High Frequency Words Eggs

Play Dough Phonics Eggs

At the start of our 'focused phonics group' - we usually start the lesson by either making the letter out of play dough, drawing it on the white boards or iPads or alternatively write the letter in sand, shaving foam etc...

This week - the children asked to make eggs to carry on playing their learning game...

So, we made the eggs out of play dough and gave them all a letter sound...

Then, we hid the paper eggs in plastics eggs...
