What is ‘Cursive’ Handwriting?

Cursive handwriting is a term used for joined-up or linked handwriting.

Once the child has learnt to print a letter they will be taught how to join the letters together.

The traditional way to teach handwriting is to teach the child to print the single letter and when they have mastered the correct formation of each letter the child is then taught how to join the letters (cursive).

Now, many schools skip teaching the child to print the letter and teach the children the joined-up strokes from the beginning of learning to write.

Well, the ‘jury is out’ on this one and there has been much written of the pros and cons of each theory.

Our abc letter tracing app offers both cursive and printing letters.

We would recommend that the child become proficient with the print letter formation before moving on to learning the cursive.
